Jillsmo at Yeah. Good Times. ranted said that “…the moment when the USA leads the rest of the world in Olympic gold medals AND obesity is NOT AWKWARD, rather, IT IS UNFORTUNATE.”
I totally agree with her. It is unfortunate for a country who seems to value athleticism to have the most obese people in the world.
How does this unfortunate thing happen? Isn’t practically everyone going green and oganic nowadays?
I’ll tell you how. It’s by allowing selfish, money-hungry, inconsiderate businesses to make bad food worse, then letting them sell it to the crowd.
I was at the fair last week. Imagine my horror as I looked up and saw these:
These were the actual signs that were staring at me. I HAD to snap photos of them. To tell you the truth, the aroma that was flowing out of that booth was intoxicatingly good! But, reading that “Totally Fried” sign made me want to vomit in front of the place.
Can I say, “Only in America?”
Twinkies?! Totally fried Twinkies?! One heart attack isn’t good enough?
Do you know how big a turkey leg is? Sure, it’s turkey – healthier than other meats – but a WHOLE turkey leg wrapped in ONE POUND OF BACON for one person to eat? Seriously. I saw people, literally going cavemen-like and devouring one whole thing by themselves!
Seeing something like this really slashes my hope for this country and its rising Obesity epidemic. I’ll you one thing though. My family and I won’t be part of those statistics. We did NOT buy anything from that booth. We never will. No matter how good it smells.
How about you? What have you done to keep you and your family from adding to “the statistics”?
{Linking up with these wonderful people…}

I’ll tell you what though…totally laughing at that one sign that says “grilled” chicken kebabs! LOL
I cannot imagine someone eating anything here. How could you even get it down your throat? ack. agh. Our fair had Deep Fried Mars Chocolate bars! seriously – the 450 calories of one chocolate bar isn’t enough?
I will admit, we do let our diets go a bit out the window at the fair – I am definitely a sucker for a candy apple and some fries from the chip wagon. But the most decadent we will go is a Beaver Tail (fried dough pastry with various topping options), and we normally share 2 between all of 5 of us. Look it up on Wiki – they are delicious. I like the basic cinnamon and lemon ones….DH goes all out with chocolate hazelnut sauce and Reese Pieces. But his over 6 foot…..he can spread the weight out better than me! LOL

I guess they figured they ought to have at least one “healthy” choice right? LOL
And yes, fairs are dangerous for those of us trying to lose the weight and get fit. That’s why we usually bring our own water bottles – so we dont have to buy any sugared drinks – and our own snacks. At most, we buy lunch there. Usually, we go for the grilled kind of stuff – nothing deep fried. And to treat ourselves, maybe a cone or two of frozen yogurts to share. =)
When’s the last time you’ve been at the fair? I wonder if Canadian fairs are more fun?
